Things Marketers Should Avoid When Using SEO

SEO can be a tricky tool to leverage and master considering the ever-changing algorithms of search engines. It is a constantly changing field that forces marketers to switch up their SEO practices.

Like everything else, SEO also has its own fair share of rules that can affect your search engine page rankings (SERPs). Violating them can not only sink your ranking but also penalize you. Google has penalties for websites that do not follow their SEO guidelines.

Today we continue our SEO series and walk you through some of the most common mistakes marketers should avoid when using SEO.

Keyword Stuffing

This flawed technique overloads a content with keywords for SERPs. Keyword stuffing makes your article look like spam. But that’s not to say that keywords are not important anymore.

Google wants high-quality, well-written content that targets audiences with relevant keywords. They need to sound natural and not forced. Write articles that are keyword-focused without stuffing them. Don’t worry too much about not using the exact words in searches; Google knows what you’re talking about!

Purchasing Links

When it comes to backlinks, quality trumps quantity. Generating unnatural, bought links is setting your SEO strategy for failure. In addition, buying links is against Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

Avoid this pitfall by implementing SEO strategies that can help boost organic link generation. One way is by creating content that other sites can use and credit you for. These include infographics, value posts, whitepaper, and other value-adding content.

Duplicate Content

Perhaps one of the biggest SEO blunders that any marketer can commit is republishing content. Google prioritizes sites that consistently publish original, substantial articles. Thin content simply doesn’t rank well anymore.

Duplicate content is a huge no-no when it comes to SEO. If you’re accepting guest posting on your website, always double check submissions for previous publications. Write unique and informative content that can help readers. Content that goes into detail and covers as much areas as possible without giving readers information overload is a plus in Google’s eyes.

Low Quality Content

The goal of content creation is to address a specific need. Vague content that aren’t particularly focused on any keywords can be harmful to your SEO strategy because it will not reach its intended audience. Covering too much topics in one article diminishes your chances of relevancy. Incoherent content not only confuses readers but can also lower your ranking.

Much like asking an expert, search engines aim to provide the people with the most useful, informative results as possible. Write content that is not only relevant to your brand but also valuable for your readers. Make sure it is highly targeted towards a specific topic. Remember not to veer off course and be consistent!

Not Being Mobile-Friendly

In 2014, mobile swiftly rose to become the leading digital platform. More and more people are turning to smartphones and tablets to make quick searches on Google. The demand for non-desktop browsing experience is on the rise and it is not slowing down any time soon.

Google has recognized this shift and gives credence to sites that are mobile-friendly. If you are unsure about your site being fit for mobile, you can easily check it with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test. They will analyze your page and tell you what needs to be optimized!

When it comes to SEO, there is no such thing as shortcuts. Stay focused on your goals and think about the long-term gains. Building your SEO reputation takes time and great planning so don’t try to find a quick and easy solution. Be persistent and consistent with your SEO strategy to gain a solid footing in search engine radars!
