Over the past couple of months, social media has become more than just a “personal” platform to thousands of Filipinos. It became a powerful instrument for Filipino netizens as they leveraged the reach of social media to gather resources, unite different people groups, and spread social awareness throughout the country. Social media gave new meaning to accountability and responsible governance by allowing the nation to scrutinize the lives of politicians as shared in various social networking sites. It also created a new form of social activism by allowing Filipinos to organize a movement dubbed as the “Million People March” that called for the abolition of the pork barrel. Here is the  timeline of the Pork Barrel Scandal as it unfolded before the eyes of social media.

Social medias like Facebook, Instagram and tweeter made it easier for Filipinos to be vigilant and aware of the current situation. I believe that it is a good thing, as it is scary. We are all quite aware that not all posted on social media are not true, and because of the anonymity the internet offers, many will spread false and harmful information for monetary gain.
Social awareness is a good thing, and i would like to believe that it is also a sign of progress, but we I also think that being intelligent in choosing what to share and like is our responsibility and not just because it’s our personal platform.
